Testicular Prosthesis Surgery

Topic at a Glance

  • Testicular prosthesis surgery is a cosmetic procedure that replaces one or both missing testicles with an artificial implant.
  • Modern testicular implants are designed to closely match the size, shape, weight, and feel of a natural testicle.
  • Recovery is usually straightforward, with most patients returning to normal daily activities within 7–10 days.
  • Many men experience improved confidence, emotional well-being, and restored scrotal symmetry after implantation.

Having a missing testicle is often an emotionally challenging situation for men. A testicular prosthesis procedure is a simple and safe surgical solution that can help those with a missing testicle achieve the cosmetic result they desire.

If you have questions regarding modern testicular prostheses and would like to know if you are a candidate for a testicular implant, schedule a consultation with our team at Urology of Greater Atlanta. Call or book an appointment now.

When Should Men Consider Testicular Prosthesis Implantation?

Many decide to have an implanted testicle prosthesis when they have lost one or both testicles. Testicle damage may result from torsion or trauma. Some may need to remove their testicles (orchiectomy) because of testicular cancer. They can also get damaged if they do not descend.

Testicular implants do not function as natural testicles and are chosen for purely cosmetic purposes. Testicular prostheses are similar to breast implants. They can either be saline-filled, silicone gel-filled, or fully solid. Your doctor will consider your medical circumstances to determine whether testicular implants are right for you.

What Are the Different Types of Testicular Implants?

Artificial testicles have been made from various materials over the years, including glass, plastic, metal, rubber, and silicone. Currently, Coloplast is the only FDA-approved testicular implant manufacturer, and they are the world leader in prosthetic technology.

The different types of modern testicular prosthesis implants include the following:

  1. Saline-Filled Implants: A saline-filled testicular prosthesis is the only type of implant that the FDA approves. A saline-filled testicular implant is very similar to a natural testicle in terms of softness, weight, and size. Before implantation, this type of implant is filled with a saline solution.
  2. Soft-Solid Implants: A soft-solid testicular prosthesis is filled with a cured silicone elastomer before implantation. They are available in various sizes and are similar to silicone breast implants.
The FDA does not approve of soft-solid testicular prostheses, but they are available in limited countries outside of the USA.
  3. Silicone Elastomer Implants: A silicone-elastomer prosthesis is made of a thin and smooth-surfaced silicone elastomer and can be likened to an oval carving block. These silicone implants are designed to have a shape and density similar to actual testicles. Although Silicone Elastomer implants are not FDA-approved, they are used throughout the United States and are very safe.

What Does a Testicular Prosthesis Procedure Involve?

Your doctor will choose an implant size that will match the normal testicle, or in the case of two missing, will choose two implants to restore the symmetry of the scrotum. The testicle will match the natural feel of a real testicle.

Testicular implant surgery is done with the patient under general anesthesia. The testicular implant procedure follows these steps:

  • The urologist will make a small incision either in the lower part of your groin or the upper part of your scrotum.
  • They’ll create a pouch that will hold the artificial testicle inside your scrotum.
  • The implant will be sewn into place inside your scrotum.
  • The incision is closed with stitches.

The whole procedure can usually be performed in under an hour as an outpatient procedure. A testicle implant can also be inserted at the same time as the removal of the natural testicle.

Potential Complications

The testicular prosthesis procedure is relatively safe. However, there is a slight risk of implant rupture, autoimmune disorder, and connective tissue disease. In some cases, inflammation or rejection of the implant may occur. Your doctor will be able to answer any questions or address any concerns about the procedure.

Recovery After Testicular Implant Surgery

Following the surgical procedure, patients usually feel some discomfort for the first 48 hours. There may also be some swelling. The bandages should be kept on for several days following surgery. Some people benefit from using supportive clothing through the healing process.

Returning to normal activity is usually possible within 7 to 10 days after the surgery. However, it may take up to a month before you can return to activities such as heavy lifting, strenuous activity, and cycling. Most people can return to sexual activity within 1-2 weeks.

Living with a Testicular Prosthesis

A testicular prosthetic can bring many psychological benefits that bring a high level of patient satisfaction. Testicular implants restore symmetry, giving a balanced appearance for those who are interested in body image. Many men report improved confidence and emotional well-being after implantation.

FAQs About Testicular Prosthesis Surgery

Men who have lost one or both testicles due to trauma, testicular torsion, cancer, orchiectomy, or undescended testicles may be candidates for a testicular implant.

No. A testicular prosthesis is designed for cosmetic purposes only and does not produce testosterone or sperm.

Most people can return to normal activities within 7–10 days, though strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for about a month.

Testicular prosthesis surgery is generally considered safe. However, like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks such as infection, implant movement, rupture, or inflammation.

Modern implants are designed to closely resemble a natural testicle in terms of appearance, weight, and softness, helping restore a balanced appearance to the scrotum.
